Kashi Vishwanath Temple

According to beliefs, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the place where Lord Shiva first appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga. Jyotirlinga means a ‘structure made of light.’ Centuries ago, a debate broke out between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding their supremacy. To stop their fight, Lord Shiva took the form of a column of unlimited size and asked Brahma and Vishnu to find its end. Shiva assigned the lower part to Vishnu and the upper part to Brahma.

Brahma started ascending in the form of a swan and Vishnu in the form of a boar. Both of them did not get the end of Jyotirlinga. When this race ended and all three met, Brahma lied to Lord Shiva and said that he had found the end of this Jyotirlinga. But Vishnu truthfully said that he did not find the end of it. At this time, Lord Shiva cursed Brahma for his lying. Shiva explained the characteristics of Jyotirlinga and said it was impossible to find its end. Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the first Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas.

At that time, Lord Shiva tells Parvati that this entire world and food are Maya (illusions). Goddess Parvati, who is Mahamaya herself, became angry after hearing this statement from Lord Shiva, and in anger, she made food disappear from the entire earth.

When food disappeared all over the earth, people started suffering from hunger. Lord Shiva realized his mistake and went to Goddess Parvati, asking for food. Vishalakshi Temple, Varanasi

The Vishalakshi Temple is situated at Manikarnika Ghat in Banaras. This temple is a Shaktipeeth where the body parts of Goddess Sati have fallen. When Prajapati Daksh started the Yagya, he did not allow Lord Shiva and his daughter Sati to participate in it. Even after being stopped by Lord Shiva, Goddess Sati went to participate in her father's yagya. Seeing this, Daksh became angry and insulted Lord Shiva. Saddened by the insult of her husband, Lord Shiva, Goddess Sati sacrificed her life.

After the death of Goddess Sati, Lord Shiva started roaming on the earth with her dead body and then Lord Vishnu scattered her body with his Sudarshan Chakra.

Kaal Bhairav Temple, Varanasi

Kaal Bhairav Temple is established in Vishweshwarganj, Varanasi. Kaal Bhairav is an “anger form” of Lord Shiva. It is said that Kaal Bhairav was manifested by Lord Shiva to protect the Shaktipeeths. Wherever the body parts of Lord Shiva's wife, Goddess Sati, had fallen, Lord Shiva established Shaktipeeths. So that no one can touch those Shaktipeeths or any harm can come to them, that is why Lord Shiva has appointed Kaal Bhairav as Kotwal there.

The word “Kaal” means time and death. It is said that Lord Kaal Bhairav is the destroyer of fear and death. According to the second story, Lord Shiva had ordered the fifth head of Brahma to be removed from the house. When Kaal Bhairav removed the fifth head of Brahma, his head remained stuck to his hand. Then Lord Shiva asked Kaal Bhairav to visit different places of pilgrimage to remove the sin of killing Brahma.

When Lord Kaal Bhairav came to Varanasi after visiting many places of pilgrimage, Brahma's head fell from the hands of Kaal Bhairav. The place where this incident took place is called Kapal Mochan Teerth. At that time, Lord Shiva ordered Kaal Bhairav to reside there so that he could remove the sins of other devotees.
